On the tube I saw an advert which is quite common; a new investing app. A common part of these sort of adverts is to display the amount of money in your account and a nice graph with the line going up.

I’m always curious how they decide what number to show for the account size. I assume they do some user research on their app to see what the distribution of sizes are. The question I have is what do they do with that information? Do they display the most common amount, in an attempt to appeal to users “That’s me, so relatable!” or display a slightly larger amount that the average so they get people thinking “That could be me, if I used the app!“?

I wrote a small piece about this.
