With the population becoming more and more uncertain around the use of AI, many in the creative space are signalling their disapproval by using “No AI!” captioning on their work.
Whatever your personal preference is, I lean towards being apprehensive that a blanket disparaging of the use of AI is unhelpful to progressing. Similar to the shift from having to go to the library to searching for something online. It can be a step away from the tedium of manual process, whilst still leaving space for human creativity.
My proposal is that instead of a binary choice of use (which as a side-note I now believe is impossible to truthfully say ‘no’ as we consume and are directed subconsciously by AI media), that we move to an framework of informed consent.
People who put media out into the world would go through a checklist and highlight where, how, and how much, AI has been used in the production of the content that is to be consumed. I for one care more about the origin of the idea, rather than the way it is conveyed, therefore a “nutriscore”-esque banner which tells me the idea was original but the images aren’t, would still be a green flag for me.
Similar to being wrong about meme slop, allowing people to better understand the use of AI will promote ethical and informed discussion around its usage.
